Saurav Roy Chowdhury

Being born in an artist’s family, Saurav Roy Chowdhury started clay modeling at an early age. Soon after completing secondary school, he entered  Kala Bhavan, the fine arts academy of Visva Bharati University. He did post-graduation from the same art school in 2001. After completing art school he became a full-time sculptor.

 

Saurav Roy Chowdhury is known for his refined sculptural works exploring the human body while incorporating organic forms. In his work he often explores the themes of transcendence, meditation, spirituality, and tragedy. He has shown his works in several major sculpture shows in India and abroad.

 

Saurav’s work has been exhibited at art biennales, international art fairs, and his sculpture was sold at Christie’s auction in 2008. He has participated in two international residency programmes in Norway. In recent years he had the honor of being chosen as the artist of Kristiansand, Norway where he lived and worked in 2017.  He was chosen for a public art project in Aalborg, Denmark in 2021. He has also attended numerous art camps supported by government and private organizations in different states of India.

    

He has been the recipient of the Birla Academy Award, India, Emami Chisel Art Award, India, Elizabeth Greenshields Grant, Canada, and Kristiansand Kommune Grant, Norway.

 

He had multiple solo exhibitions of sculptures in India and abroad. His works were shown on the occasion of India’s 70 years of independence show at BACC, Bangkok, Thailand. Since 2015 he has been participating in CIMA Awards show, an art biennale of Kolkata, India.   His exhibitions include NGMA Gallery, Mumbai, Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai, Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, CIMA Gallery, Kolkata, and Akar Prakar Gallery, Kolkata.

He is also a recipient of two scholarships (Lalit Kala Akademi and National scholarship) in visual art, supported by government of India.  His last public lecture was on evolution of sculpture, Silpakorn University, Nakhon Pathom, Thailand.
